The future of the medical research workforce
Panel Chair - Professor Kathryn North AC
The future success of the Australian medical research sector is dependent on its highly skilled medical research workforce. In this session the Panel will discuss what needs to be done to ensure that medical research continues to attract and retain the best talent from both within Australia and overseas. Workforce sustainability issues, gender inequity, an absence of adequate sustainable career pathways, declining funding rates, and job insecurity have all been identified as chronic problems that make medical research a less desirable career. Over time this can lead to outstanding potential talent not pursuing a career in medical research as well as many highly skilled researchers leaving the medical research workforce. The Panel will discuss the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead and will put forward suggestions on the changes needed to build a resilient and world-class medical research workforce.
